Pre-Reading: Find the Building Blocks

Reading is made up of words. Words, sentences, and paragraphs are the building blocks of reading.

Before you start reading, you need to find the beginning and the end of sentences, and find the paragraphs.

Finding the beginning and end of sentences, and finding the paragraphs will improve your reading skills.

Pre-Reading: Sentences

A sentence is a group of words. A sentence tells you a complete thought.

A sentence can end with a period (full stop). Here is an example:

Joe walked home.

A sentence can end with a question mark. Here is an example:

When will Jane get home?

A sentence can end with an exclamation mark. Here is an example:

We want to go home!

Look at what you will be reading. Find the first sentence. Then, find the first word. Find the last word. How many words are in the first sentence?

Understanding sentences will improve your reading skills.
